How to Become a Paid Caregiver for Your Loved One

Elite understands that children thrive with consistency. In many cases, we are able to hire a caregiver already known to the family, such as a trusted relative or family friend, to provide approved Personal Care or Respite services. This option helps maintain stability, trust, and comfort in your child's daily routine.

Who Can Be a Paid Caregiver

Under South Carolina Medicaid and waiver guidelines, certain family members may be eligible to become a paid caregiver, while others are not.

The following individuals cannot be paid caregivers:

  • The spouse of a Medicaid participant
  • A parent of a minor child
  • A stepparent of a minor child
  • A foster parent of a minor child
  • A legal guardian or any legally responsible adult

Additionally, primary caregivers may not be reimbursed for certain waiver respite services, depending on the program. Other qualified family members, such as adult siblings or extended relatives, may be eligible if they meet waiver guidelines. Eligibility is determined by Medicaid waiver rules and service authorization.

What Is Required

If an eligible family member or trusted individual would like to become a paid caregiver through Elite, they must:
